Ajo y Agua

Spring break has been hitting us recently with nice weather, bikinis, BBQs and the like. Hopefully the music will catch on soon. In the meantime something good to hold us over.

Access In Moderation

We seem to be a little lost these days in between festivals and conferences of people celebrating/promoting work that hasn't revealed itself, and to be frank, it's probably just sane jealousy and envy that makes me write about it, as I'd like to be there myself. It'd be nice to be in Miami right now, would've been nice to have been in Austin, but it wasn't to be. So we will be the blog that sort of filters all the bullshit that comes out and tries to deliver better, best and different, if not innovative, in order to expand your horizons as well as ours. We might force it a bit, but it's better to have posts with something that we found interesting rather than having them deleted by the long arm of the law.

Rap Up

Had a decent time @ HARD13. Would say it's a little overrated given the all ages crowd, the copious amounts of trance ravers and the price of drinks at the venue, but you can't complain when you have this man yelling at ravers as a surprise.

Also, we got an e-mail about this website recently, and it has provided me with laughter every time I think about it in my day to day endeavors.

Here are some of the cooler things I've been listening to as of late:

Beware the Ides of Mars

Ok so I'm still working on my DJ skills and I'll be the First To Admit that my mixes aren't perfect. But I have come to one conclusion and I think Mateusz can back me up on this: just like you play pool much better three or four pints in, DJing comes easier under the influence. This is just a mix I made for the Ides of March, a collection of old and new stuff starting off with a band that needs no introduction, Röyksopp. Their new songs are all over the blogospheres (is that how you say it?), except for "It's What I Want"--a song which works above all because, as opposed to those tracks which feature guest singers, the vocals play an equally integral part as the beat and melody, almost to the point where you can't really understand what they're saying, like the way that a Hendrix riff starts to sound like a sentence after a few listens. Listening to this and "Happy Up Here," it seems The Norwegian duo have developed a new, more darkdancehouse sound since Melody AM... So enjoy that and the rest. Here's the link and tracklist.

Disco Throwback

Been listening to old disco for a couple of years now, and in comparison, this Eddie Mars doctored Vietcong Disco comes closer than anything else in showcasing those characteristics while still providing what I want to hear from nu disco. Liking his mission statement, and it should come as no surprise that he plays with/is associated with usual suspects of the genre DFA.

Forgotten Discoveries

Should have posted about Gus Gus a while ago. I really like their stuff, have been listening to it, and never felt like I should share it for whatever inexplicable reason. Gus Gus is quite clearly emphasizing their sound around early 90s American house, seeing us further distancing ourselves from french touch and into a scene that's more fixated with softer rhythms and nostalgic 80's synths, tho they've been around since the late 90s.

Attendance Required

Good shows coming up, folks. This weekend sees California receive heavy blog-world juggernauts in the electronic scene in preparation for the big bash down in Austin. For starters, this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Miami Horror will be showcasing his Aussie flair in SF, SD and LA, respectively. Tonight's show sees him pair up with the Cut Copy DJs at Popscene; tomorrow, my town will host him at U-31 for Feel the Noise, San Diego's favored electro-dance nite w/ DJs Gabe Vega and Saul Q; Saturday will have him with Futurecop! @ the Echoplex. There should be something to like for everybody here, even if it's not Miami Horror (shame on you if that's the case).

Just as interesting is tomorrow nite, as LA hosts HARD 13. An all-star cast of DJs, headlined by Boys Noize would warrant you being there anyways, but as if that wasn't enough, also playing are Shadow Dancer, Boy 8-Bit, Diplo, D.I.M. and Erol Alkan amongst others. You can take this moment to drool if you'd like.

2/3 of the members of this blog will be @ HARD 13, hopefully most of you who read this will be there, and if not then in any of the shows listed above. In any case, hef a fan thyme, cuz we know we will:

Damn Arms Break Up

The phrase, "It's too good to be true," never fails in its painful double effect.Damn Arms, a duo that was so promising for 2009, ending 2008 with the truly majestic "Destination" EP, has announced a breakup. Sad, news doesn't always have to be exciting . . .
